According to the franchise’s official X (formerly Twitter), two new volumes will release on Oct. 18, 2025: Junior High School DxD 3: Asgard of the Music Festival and High School DxD DX.8: The Job of a Super-Class Devil, both from Kadokawa. This marks the long-awaited return of the DX short story collections after three years. Pre-orders are already open on Japanese retail sites. The DX volumes, written by creator Ichiei Ishibumi, compile stories from magazines like Dragon Magazine alongside brand-new tales. DX.8 will include a new story featuring Issei as a High-Class Devil, making it especially notable since Dragon Magazine ceased publication earlier in 2025.
Meanwhile, the newer spinoff Junior High School DxD by Rippu Shinonome, based on an Ishibumi draft, began in May 2024. It introduces protagonist Zekka Miyamoto and continues after the High School DxD Hero anime. The third volume sends the Occult Research Club to Asgard, where they form a band to perform at a music festival.
Despite this good news, fans are still waiting for confirmation of a fifth anime season. The last, High School DxD Hero, aired more than five years ago. Hopes spiked last year, but a hyped “big announcement” turned out to be a sales milestone of 7.8 million copies. Still, staff assured fans the series would continue in “all forms.”
The sequel series Shin High School DxD is also paused, with Volume 4 released back in February 2020. Due to the author’s health, the main story remains on hold. Yet, these new publications give fans renewed optimism for the franchise’s future—and possibly an anime return.
